MANILA, Philippines—The prospect of yet another tropical storm like “Ondoy” (international codename: Ketsana) hitting the Philippines next week has worried Malacañang that it is calling for prayers for the weather disturbance to spare the country.

Tropical Storm “Pepeng” (international codename: Parma) has intensified into a typhoon and entered the country’s area of responsibility Wednesday afternoon.

As if this were not enough, another tropical storm is moving toward the Philippines.

This other weather system has been given the international name “Melor” and is located in the Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines and is closing in on the Marianas Islands on Wednesday afternoon.

Overworked

Admitting that the government’s disaster management system was already “overworked,” Anthony Golez, deputy presidential spokesperson, Wednesday said the country could not afford to face another calamity too soon.

“Coming to mind another disaster of the same magnitude, the systems of the disaster management o f f i c e in the country would be doubly overworked,” said Golez, also the deputy administrator of the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).

“So let us just hope that scenario will not happen and we’ll just pray that the entire country will be spared from such a disaster,” he added.

The country is bracing for the possibility that the weather disturbance that entered the Philippine area of responsibility Wednesday would develop into a strong typhoon.

Golez said the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) had been instructed to come up with hourly weather bulletins.

Gusts of 150 kph

In its weather update at 11 p.m. Wednesday, PAGASA said Pepeng was located 750 kilometers east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 135 kilometers per hour near the center with gustiness of up to 160 kph.

It is moving west northwest at 26 kph.

Pepeng is expected to be 440 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes, by Thursday evening, 250 kilometers north northeast of Virac by Friday afternoon and 270 kilometers north of Casiguran, Aurora, or 80 kilometers east northeast of Aparri, Cagayan, by Saturday evening.

The agency said Pepeng was still too far to affect the country.

Monitor weather bulletins

Prisco Nilo, the head of PAGASA, advised the public to watch out for weather bulletins from PAGASA on Pepeng.

“What we can do is to continue monitoring the developments so we can plan our appropriate actions from there,” he said.

Nathaniel Cruz, PAGASA director for operations, said there was a “big possibility” Pepeng could intensify into a supertyphoon.

On its website, PAGASA said Wednesday afternoon the cyclone was still too far to affect the country.

Cruz said there were no signs yet Pepeng posed a threat to Metro Manila, where Ondoy dumped record rains on Saturday causing heavy floods and killing hundreds of people in the metropolis and neighboring provinces.

Northern Luzon

Nilo told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that Pepeng was tracking a west northwest route and was heading for the general direction of northern Luzon and Taiwan.

But he said it could make landfall in two or three days in northern Luzon, or at least affect the region with rains and thunderstorms.

“It could still change direction,” Nilo said. He added that there was also the possibility that the storm could head toward Central Luzon.

Na das is doch was, oder?
